The entrance gate of a home is much more than a functional element. It is the first point of contact with the house, an architectural gesture that introduces its character and offers a glimpse into the personality of those who live there.
In this project, the gate was designed for a historic property in a small village near Udine, where the rustic character of the existing architecture is combined with a certain understated elegance. The main challenge was therefore to introduce a contemporary element while respecting the strong identity and historical value of its surroundings.
Vegetation played an essential role in the concept. The existing stone and brick portal is surrounded by greenery, inspiring a design in which nature becomes part of the gate itself. The perforated pattern, composed of intertwined branches and leaves, allows light and vegetation to filter through the metal surface, creating a constantly changing dialogue between the built environment and the landscape.
To complement the raw and authentic character of the historic structure, we chose Corten steel, a material intended to evolve naturally over time. Rather than concealing the effects of ageing, its surface embraces them: exposure to weather gradually develops a protective patina, allowing the gate to change alongside the architecture and vegetation that surround it.
The result is a contemporary intervention that does not compete with the existing building, but becomes part of it, connecting architecture, material and nature.
